MULTIFORM, THE TEAM SPORT CONCEIVED BY GABRIEL FONTANA

For this new edition of Le Nouveau Printemps, artist Gabriel Fontana invites the public to participate in a Multiform session during the festival’s opening weekend, on Saturday, May 30 at 12:00 p.m. in the garden of the Observatoire de Jolimont.

A leading figure in social design, Gabriel Fontana develops projects at the intersection of art, sports, and community education. His field of research? Sports, viewed not as performance but as a social laboratory. By inventing new rules of the game, he questions how our bodies internalize norms of gender, identity, and power, and proposes that we unlearn these codes.

In the form of a game, Multiform allows players to reflect on and experiment with the concepts of empathy by inviting them to develop new forms of social interaction and camaraderie.

In this discipline conceived by the artist, three teams play simultaneously, and participants wear transformable outfits that lead them to switch sides several times during the game. Belonging is no longer a fixed boundary separating two teams, but a fluid, collective, and relational space.

Featured notably at the 2024 Paris Olympics and recently acquired by MoMA, Multiform has become the first queer sport to be included in a museum collection.
