Carte blanche à Rossy de Palma

Les Abattoirs has invited artist Rossy de Palma to present a selection of works by Spanish and Hispanic artists from its collections.

To mark the latest edition of the Le Nouveau Printemps festival, Les Abattoirs has invited its associate artist Rossy de Palma to curate a new exhibition featuring works from its collections of artists from the Ibero-American world.

The Abattoirs’ collections, blending modern and contemporary art, are distinguished by having developed, since the institution’s founding, a strong focus on Spanish and, more broadly, Ibero-American artists. This focus is rooted in the region’s history and its geographical and cultural proximity to Spain. Works by historic Spanish artists such as Pablo Picasso, Manolo Millares, Eduardo Arroyo, Antoni Clavé, Equipo Crónica, and Miquel Barceló form a strong, distinctive core from which the collections have gradually expanded, with a particular focus over the past decade on female artists and an opening up to the Ibero-American world.

Thus, numerous artists such as Ouka Leele, Pilar Albarracín, Teresa Margolles, Carlos Aires, Libia Posada, and Daniela Ortiz, among others, have been added to the collections, making it possible to trace alternative narratives and broaden perspectives on art history.

This exhibition, conceived by Rossy de Palma, offers a reinterpretation of this body of work through the lens of her own artistic sensibility. It is part of an ongoing series of invitations extended to artists from diverse backgrounds to engage with the Abattoirs’ collections and bring a fresh, embodied perspective to them.

Les Abattoirs is also hosting a project by the Centre national des arts plastiques in connection with the Danses Interdites exhibition. The project Let’s Dance!, conceived by Pascale Cassagnau using video works from the Centre national des arts plastiques’ collection, lies at the intersection of dance, performance, and music. It will be presented in the Les Abattoirs Auditorium throughout the festival.
