Paul Maheke
Born in 1985. Lives and works in Montpellier.
Through various forms and media, Paul Maheke pursues a long-term exploration of the ways in which marginalized bodies, narratives, and histories are made visible and invisible.
Resisting an exploration of identity that falls solely within the framework of identity politics, Paul Maheke’s trajectory has been continually channeled by spectral sensations. In his work, the artist summons ghosts, spirits, and non-human beings to invite a reorientation of how the public is able to perceive, feel, and listen; a state where esotericism, queer and embodied spiritualities help him create new prophecies.
His work has been exhibited at Tate Modern, the Venice Biennale, the Centre Pompidou, and the Palais de Tokyo. Winner of the 25th Pernod Ricard Foundation Prize, he is a resident at the Villa Medici for the 2025–2026 academic year.
