Maui

María Luisa Ramírez, Maui, through art.

Born in Utrera (Seville), niece of the legendary Bambino and daughter of guitarist and composer Miguel Ramírez (Los Centellas), she grew up in a pure flamenco environment, surrounded by potaje stew, guitars, and lots of compás.

At the age of 18, she moved to Granada to study the cello; it was there that she began collaborating with various groups before deciding to form her own, Maui y Los Sirénidos, with whom she released three albums and won numerous awards, including the 2009 UFI Award for Best Flamenco Album. After her physical and spiritual move from her beloved Granada to Madrid, she released her first work under the name Maui, Viaje Interior (Inner Journey). But she was not satisfied with just songs, and in 2016 she began her journey into theatrical flamenco, first with the show Soy una feria, then in 2018 with Domingos de Vermut y Potaje, still running with notable success and a long-term vision.

In January 2019, she released a new album, Por Arte de Magia, a work of equal parts strength and sensitivity, produced by Fernando Illán, with collaborations such as the masterful verses of Chipi de La Canalla, the flute of maestro Jorge Pardo, the voice of gypsy wizard Antonio Carmona, and the singing and salt of the magician of compás, Tomasito.

Sixteen years of wandering on stage and five albums to her credit underpin the career of this unique artist, who has carved out a curious path for herself made of albero and blue poppies. Far from any known definition, she has been described as the Björk of Utrera, the Lady Gaga of flamenco, the Woody Allen of song, a diva of humor with compás, a singer-actress... but she is simply Maui, unique in her way of composing, in her singular aesthetic, and in her stage presence.
